What Technology Didn’t Exist 15 Years Ago?

It’s hard to believe that some of the technology we use today didn’t exist 15 years ago. Can you imagine a world without smartphones, social media, or even streaming services like Netflix?

Mobile phones

In the early 2000s, mobile phones were a luxury item, with much less functionality than they have today. They were used primarily for making calls and sending text messages, and most people had a landline phone in addition to their mobile phone. Fifteen years later, mobile phones are ubiquitous, with many people using them as their primary (or only) phone. They can be used for a wide variety of tasks, including making calls, sending text messages, browsing the internet, checking email, and much more.

Social media

When you think about technology that didn’t exist 15 years ago, social media is probably one of the first things that comes to mind. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are all platforms that have drastically changed the way we communicate and share information. But social media is just one example of the many technologies that have emerged in the last 15 years. Other examples include:

-Smartphones: Can you imagine life without your smartphone? Just 15 years ago, smartphones were a rarity. Now, they’re an essential part of our everyday lives.
-Tablets: Tablet computers didn’t exist 15 years ago, but now they’re one of the most popular types of computing devices.
-Cloud computing: Cloud computing has revolutionized the way we store and access data.
-Artificial intelligence: Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in our lives, from powering virtual assistants to driving autonomous vehicles.

Laptops and personal computers

Laptops and personal computers were not widely available 15 years ago. Mobile phones were also not as common, and the internet was not as easily accessible.

Tablets

In 2010, Apple Inc. released the first iPad and caused a major shift in the way we think about computing. 15 years ago, people were still using desktop computers and laptops for the majority of their personal computing needs. The idea of a portable device that could do everything a desktop could do was science fiction. Today, there are hundreds of different types of tablet devices on the market from dozens of different manufacturers. Tablets have changed the way we live, work, and play.

Digital cameras

Thirty years ago, if you wanted to take a picture, you had to use a film camera. You would take the film to a store to be developed, and then you would have prints made. Today, digital cameras are the norm. You can take a picture and have it developed in minutes, or you can store it on your computer or phone and print it later.

GPS navigation

GPS navigation was not widely available 15 years ago. It was mostly used by the military and by a few businesses that could afford the expensive equipment. Today, GPS is available on many smartphones and is used by millions of people every day.

Online banking

Online banking didn’t exist 15 years ago. You had to go to a physical bank to do any kind of banking. This included things like withdrawing cash, depositing money, and transferring funds between accounts.

Online shopping

It’s hard to believe that online shopping is only about two decades old. In 1994, only 14 percent of Americans had ever made a purchase online. Today, that number is closer to 80 percent. Just a few years ago, we would have never thought to buy clothes, groceries, or even a new car without first seeing it in person. But now, it’s become the norm to purchase items without ever stepping foot inside a store.

Streaming services

In the early 2000s, people rented DVDs and CDs from physical stores. If you wanted to watch a movie, you had to leave your house, find the right store, hope they had the movie you wanted, and then return the movie on time to avoid late fees. This all changed in 2007 when Netflix introduced a streaming service that allowed instant streaming of movies and TV shows on computers. Later, they released apps for smart TVs, game consoles, and other devices. In 2013, they produced their own series (House of Cards), which was a hit. Today, Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services with over 130 million subscribers.

Cloud storage

In the past, people relied on physical storage devices to save their data. This could be a hard drive, an external hard drive, a USB flash drive, or even a floppy disk. However, now there is an alternative: cloud storage.

Cloud storage is a service that allows users to save their data on remote servers. This means that instead of storing files on your computer, you can store them online. There are many benefits to using cloud storage, including the fact that you can access your files from anywhere in the world and you don’t have to worry about losing them if your computer crashes.
